Postmodern Purist. Part One
This is me (on the left) and my kindergarten friend, photographed by my mom in 1996. In this essay I will try to understand what made this little girl who liked everything bright and shiny into a designer who makes things neutral.

Now, just a bit of statistics to start with.

1. Gender-fluid, vegan, RPG player
2. Painter, programmer, traveller
3. Economst, over-achiever

Who they were 10 years ago:

1. A punk RPG player
2. A hippie musician
3. Sad girl with the funniest ICQ statues

For us, design was represented by:

— Novelty goods in Respublika store
— Artemiy Lebedev's blog and studio
— Galileo, TV programme
— Ikea

And consisted of, namely:

— Quirky home goods
— Interfaces
— Interiors
— Logos

Artemiy Lebedev
Art.Lebedev studio started out as a web design studio. They were very good at bullshiting. Still are, I guess. They had this daily rubric where the top employees would critique some piece of graphic design and give advice to its author. Sometimes it would be constructive, sometimes not at all. Artemiy was writing a blog (still does) where he, in very authoritative language would talk about web, graphics, cities, politics, society, etc. While being quite ignorant of other people's opinion, he was a perfectionist. The studio had its famous "No bullshit" policy, which meant no half-measures and no lazy solutions. I appreciated that.

Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole. In the words of Jan Tschichold, "methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve, have been developed over centuries. To produce perfect books, these rules have to be brought back to life and applied."
Front matter, or preliminaries, is the first section of a book, and is usually the smallest section in terms of the number of pages. Each page is counted, but no folio or page number is expressed, or printed, on either display pages or blank pages.
